Human placental lactogen (hPL) can be demonstrated in human placental tissue and in the serum of pregnant women. Human placental lactogen has been identified in some breast carcinomas and in trophoblastic and nontrophoblastic tumors of the placenta, and has been used as a serum or tissue marker for trophoblastic and nontrophoblastic neoplasms.
