Hepatocyte growth factor activator inhibitor type 1 (HAI-1) is a membrane-associated Serine peptidase inhibitor Kunitz type 1 (SPINT1) that belongs to the Kunitz family. Human HAI-1 transcript is expressed in various human tissues, such as adult placenta, kidney, pancreas, prostate and small intestine, and fetal kidney and lung. HAI-1 restricts the cancer metastasis by inhibiting the HGF activity. The interaction between SPINT1 and CTB may contribute in the villous differentiation and maintenance of the villous tree. It has been reported that HAI-1 also retards the activity of various pro-metastatic serine proteases associated with tumor spreading.
