EPHX3 (Epoxide Hydrolase 3) is a human protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19p13.12 that encodes the epoxide hydrolase 3 enzyme. This enzyme belongs to the structural family of α/β hydrolase fold enzymes and plays a specialized role in epidermal lipid metabolism and maintaining the skin’s moisture barrier. EPHX3 is an emerging prognostic and diagnostic biomarker primarily utilized in cancer research and the diagnosis of rare skin barrier disorders. It is an important DNA methylation marker of prostate cancer. It is required for the detoxification of reactive xenobiotic epoxides and for the modification of endogenous epoxides which are signaling molecules. EPHX3 shows high activity towards fatty acid-derived epoxides.
